1. Reminisce on your dating years
What dates were your favorite as a couple before you were married or engaged? What were your favorite dates before you had kids together? Relive one of those dates! My wife and I used to play a lot of tennis before kids. We enjoyed trying new restaurants and exploring different cities. We would go to baseball games together to cheer on our Philadelphia Phillies.
With kids, all of those activities are harder to do now, but we are fortunate that our parents can watch our kids so we can relive those memories! I really enjoy those dates where we can reminisce on what life was like when we first started dating. It always creates cringeworthy conversation on how awkward I was as a young adult!
2. Mixed drinks on the porch
If you are unable to get a babysitter, that’s okay. It doesn’t mean that you can’t have a date night once they go to bed. Typically, we have all kids in bed by 8 pm during the summer. If it’s a school night, we try to have them all in bed between 7 and 7:15 pm. Once they are in bed, it’s a perfect time to sit together and catch up on the day’s events.
During the summer, my wife and I enjoy making mixed drinks and sitting on our porch to chat. If you aren’t into mixed drinks, ice cream is the perfect substitute! Take the quiet time at night to catch up with your spouse and find out how they are doing.
3. Escape room
Escape rooms are one of our favorite date night activities. If you have never visited an escape room, the premise is simple. Usually, there are multiple escape rooms to choose from and each room has a theme. You start in a room and you have one hour to escape. You have to search the room for clues to unlock padlocks, combinations, puzzles and more.
You are being watched, so if you get stuck, you can ask the staff for clues. If it’s just you and your spouse, you may be placed with another group, but some places let you attempt to escape with just two people. Either way, it’s a ton of fun and don’t worry. If you truly need to leave during the hour, the door is unlocked!
4. Board game night
My family loves board games. My kids have really enjoyed playing board games lately and it’s a great family activity. However, it’s really fun to break out a board game when it’s just my wife and I. We are very competitive by nature, so a board game is a perfect way to get the competitive juices flowing. If we don’t have a babysitter, we put the kids to bed and spend our date night at the kitchen table trying out various board games! These are some of our favorites:
5. A Barnes and Noble date to plan your next family vacation
We love Barnes and Noble. The best is that most, if not all, have a Starbucks inside the Barnes and Noble!
That’s what I call a win win!
Sometimes, the simple impromptu date nights involve my wife and I dropping our kids off with our parents and running to Barnes and Noble for a few hours. We enjoy going to the travel section of the bookstore and sitting down with some coffee to discuss our next family vacation. This could be a simple vacation to Disney World or a dream vacation to a new state! It’s all about connection and getting a chance to catch up and talk with my wife without any distractions!

Definitely love the first idea. Our first date was to the beach at night. Its our happy place at night! Our first date consisted of great conversation and of us saying we didn’t want to get into anything serious. 5 years later we are engaged and have 3 kids lmao
