What do you do with your kids when the weather on vacation turns to wind and rain? You play games. My two six year olds absolutely love playing games, so I’m breaking down the best board games for six year olds.

Junior Detective

best board games

If you’re a fan of the board game Clue, then you must go buy Junior Detective immediately! This game was so much fun to play with my six year olds. Junior Detective comes with 40 unsolved cases, and it is designed so that you can replay it over and over without the same ending! We played in teams and had so much fun. We had to solve clues using a spy glass, detective mirror, cipher solve card and even our own hands.

The goal of this game is to identify a culprit in each case. You move your figurine along a game board and come across witnesses who give you clues as to who the culprit is. But be careful, some witnesses are lying! You get a notepad that you can take notes on and finally, you make a guess as to whodunnit!

Mouse Trap

This is a great board game that will be sure to bring smiles to kids of all ages. There is some set up and tear down each time you want to play. It takes five minutes or so to make sure everything is set up correctly. But once set up, it’s a lot of fun to watch. My kids love watching the contraption take your marble and end up trapping your mouse figurine in the cage. It’s a great game to have your kids try to put it together and work on their fine motor skills.

Blokus

Blokus is one of those great games that can be played as the game intends or something much different. There are four colors and you start with 21 pieces of varying size of a color you choose. The goal is to take turns putting them on the board. The key is that you must touch at least one other piece of the same color, but only at the corners!

This game involves a lot of strategy and it may be overwhelming for your child. But that’s okay. My son loves to take all the pieces out and create a pretty picture using the four different colors. It almost looks like stained class when it’s over! That’s why this is one of the best board games for six year olds!
